The University of Michigan’s Community-Based Collaborative Care and Education Program provides dental services to underserved patients in need by partnering with health centers and community clinics like VINA.
The University of Michigan School of Dentistry partners with VINA to establish the second Victors for Veterans clinic in the state under the direction of Dr. Howard A. Hamerink. The program, funded by the Michigan Dental Association Foundation, provides free dental care and education to veterans in need. To qualify, veterans’ income must be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and must reside in one of seven counties: Livingston, Genesee, Shiawassee, Washtenaw, Jackson, Ingham and Oakland.
Victors for Veterans at VINA began in October 2020 and will continue through the spring semester of 2022. VINA hosts University of Michigan Dental School interns and faculty dentists to provide dental care to veterans twice a month at the clinic. The interns and faculty dentists generously donate their time to the program.
Free services for those registered in the clinic include full exams, extractions and oral surgery, root canals, fillings, dentures, crowns, bridges and more. The program also refers patients to specialists, as needed, for specialty procedures donated by local dental specialists. These local specialists who generously donate their time and services include Dr. Fred Bonine, Ward Dental Lab, Dr. Erika Johnson and Ivoclar Vivadent.

VINA Community Dental Center of Livingston County is a non-profit outreach facility that provides affordable dental care and quality dental education to Livingston County residents with limited finances. “VINA” stands for Vision, Integrity, Need, and Action. VINA treats more than 1,500 patients annually from their facility at 400 E. Grand River in Brighton.
